In this video we discuss: ENVY by Gucci (1998) Aristotle defined envy as pain at the sight of another's good fortune, stirred by "those who have what we ought to have". This rings truer than ever now that Gucci’s Envy has been long discontinued, since 2011. Envy. To me this is a very nice smell, is it well blended? Not really, not even for its time, I always found it to be rough around the edges & preferred Carven Homme to this as it is a much nicer scent with more complexity & a better drydown. Is it high quality? Yes and no, I'd say it’s middle of the road. It is after all designed to be a mainstream and mass appealing fragrance. Longevity is really good. Do I like the bottle? Yes, I like it very much, why? Because it lives up to its name. The large black dome of anonymity cloaking the sliver of green envy that seeps out from underneath. It’s literally the best part of this fragrance & judging by the word count analysis, I'm not alone in that thought. Do I think it’s worth the prices people are asking for it? No, & I’m firm on this with good reason. Reason being that those who do end up paying the over $1,000 asking price for a sealed 100ml bottle are going to wear this ‘very carefully’ if at all. No amount of ‘oh it’s so beautiful, what a great scent’ is going to overcome the fact that you paid that much for a scent that will never be your signature, not at that price & not at that rarity. Now whilst Envy is supposed to make the wearer the Envy of the crowd, after its discontinuation all it’s done is make the owner of a bottle the Envy of discontinued bottle hunters & collectors, but the most glaring for sure is what it’s done to the old wearers of this fragrance. It’s made them Envy the past and that’s something I don’t condone. You can recall the past, learn from the past, respect the past but you should never envy it. Envying the past means you consider it to be better than the present, which is fine to a degree, but it also means you consider it to be better than your future, which is not ok. You’re going to the future whether you like it or not & your perspective of it colours your experience. If your past is your best & there’s not much to look forward to then all you will see is how bad things are and how much worse they’re going to get, and highlighted in that future world, sticking out like sore thumbs will be those who are blessed with good fortune & have what you ought to have.
