Hackberry General Store is the first roadside attraction on this stretch of the infamous Route 66. The town dates back to 1874 when silver was discovered here. It grew into a tent city and was named after a large Hackberry tree growing by a natural spring. This original settlement was moved four miles in 1882 to make way for the railroad. John Grigg operated a Union 76 service station from the 1920s to 1967, and the Northside Grocery and conch Station, established in 1934, operated until 1978, when the I40 bypass was built. This left the small town of Hackberry cut off from the main route, with no off-ramp. With the new growing popularity of Route 66, the store was re-opened in 1992 and remains today as a famous roadside attraction. The Grigg family, who arrived in the area in the 1880s, still live in the town today. Our next stop is Cool Springs. This was never a town, but a critical watering hole, firstly for the military and, in more recent years, those who travelled Route 66. Passing Ed’s Camp (now on private property), we head to Shaffer Fish Bowl Springs, a natural water supply discovered by Shaffer. In the 1930s, he built a small pond for the water to collect. Locals to this day keep the pond stocked with goldfish.
