NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Top and Bottom 407) Issued on January 6, 1971, this Philly Soul anthem would ultimately become the signature song for Brenda & The Tabulations. Formed in 1966, they were discovered by Gilda Woods, wife of a local disc Jockey. Woods worked out a deal with Jamie/Guyden Records to oversee a new label that they would distribute. In existence for just under three years, the label issued only 13 singles, eight of which were by Brenda & The Tabulations, who also had the only album issued with the label. The group consisted of Brenda on lead vocal with background vocals by Eddie Jackson, Jerry Jones, and Maurice Coates. After Dionn Records closed up shop, Gilda Woods created a new label, Top And Bottom Records. In the nearly three-year life of the company, twelve singles were released that included seven by Brenda & The Tabulations. By the time the fourth single came and went, the group line-up had changed into a female trio with Brenda on lead and background vocals by Pat Mercer and Deborah Martin. The first single with the new configuration was a magical combination of the talents of singer/composer/arranger/producer - Van McCoy, and the unmistakable sound created at Philadelphia's, Sigma Sound Studios. Recorded in December 1970 and issued on January 6, 1971, 'Right On The Tip Of My Tongue' was sheer sweet soul perfection of the finest order. Peaking at #23 on the Billboard Top 100 and at #10 on the R&B chart, it made a nice impression among the record buying crowd. There was a move to Epic Records in 1972 for four singles, 'One Girl Too Late', being the biggest seller of the groups output while there until 1975. With the roll-out of disco music, three singles by Brenda & The Tabulations were released with Chocolate City Records between 1976 and 1977 and then finally one last disc with A Major Records in 1987.
