Karen Mejía - We Are All Human Rights Defenders

Karen Mejía is a laywer from Honduras. She works on the topics of urban and sexual violence and sexual and reproductive rights. She has been a human rights advocate since 2007. Besides her work as a lawyer, Karen works with young feminists and focuses on the decriminalization of abortion. More lawyers are murdered in Honduras than in any other country in the world. The National Human Rights Commission documented 89 deaths of lawyers between 2010 and March 2015, that were a result of targeted killings. Many lawyers have suffered intimidation and attacks. As a human rights defender in Honduras, Karen has received death threats and faces intimidation. Many of her colleagues were killed. Facing this reality, she does everything in her power to provide support to others at risk. Therefore, Karen applied for the Shelter City programme. In 2017, Karen was relocated for a period of three months in Amsterdam, which is one of the ten Dutch Shelter Cities in The Netherlands. The Shelter City progamme is powered by Justice and Peace Netherlands and offers rest and respite, trainings and networking opportunities to human rights defenders at risk. During her stay in The Netherlands Karen got in touch with Dutch feminist and human rights organisations, developed skills around advocacy and security, visited many museums and was able to rest and reflect.
