Weirdly, after having done almost a year of these #texasstyletuesday videos, I realized that this absolute unit of a tune slipped through the cracks. How have I not recorded Bill Cheatum yet? Also, can we spend like three paragraphs just discussing the many ways to spell Cheatum? These are the questions of our time. This is an old one. Scholars maintain, well, they don’t maintain much. But we do know it was an entire category in a fiddle contest in Gallatin, TN (just about 25 miles from where I sit right this very minute) back in 1899. Everyone had to play a version of this tune. I’m glad I wasn’t there, because I wouldn’t have known to play the Terry Morris lick all the way back then so I probably would have lost. Hope you’re all well.
