Digitalization in the process industry is in full swing, and it is starting at the field level. The Ethernet standard Profinet has established itself as the standard protocol for automation and scores points with its real-time capability, update rate, and manufacturer independence. With Ethernet APL, digitalization is finally reaching the field level, as sensors and actuators can now also be connected in hazardous areas. NOA (NAMUR Open Architecture), PA-DIM (information model for process industry devices), and FDI technology have further expanded the possibilities for field device integration in digital environments. The presentation introduces use cases implemented with the NOA concept and explains: • How NOA-compliant device management can be implemented in smaller systems using edge devices • How PA-DIM, the information model for process industry devices, ensures uniform mapping of information from field devices across manufacturers • How PA-DIM works as a standardized information model in OPC UA for field devices • How FDI technology reduces the engineering effort for field device integration to a minimum
