Third World was one of the first groups we filmed for Reggae Strong (in 1984) and that early program was the pilot episode we used to obtain air-time and sponsorship. Stafford Ashani, my partner, who conceived the Reggae Strong series (and appears in the opening) was long-time friends with the members of Third World and that camaraderie is evident in his interview here and the studio sessions that Reggae Strong filmed with them over the years.. The unexpected and painful loss of the gifted Cat Coore, is another reminder of how short our journeys really are. While I was editing this, it occurred to me that this interview is forty years old (the session at the end is from 1984) and that. we are as far from those days now as we were then from the end of World War II...which seemed so distant to me at the time. In other words - I'm feeling the weight of history in this archive. Sincere and deep condolences to the family and friends of Third World veteran, Stephen Cat Coore. I've heard that the cello is the instrument closest in tone to the human voice. The extra voice and tone that Cat brought to Third World's performances will be profoundly missed. In this video, I have to hail up and recognize two other veterans: drummers Junior Wedderburn and Ras Tschaka Tonge...still here and still making music, as well as Willie Stewart and Richard Daley, who keep the Third World fire burning. R.I.P. and love Stafford, Bunny ugs, Ibo and Cat.
