Francesca Jones’s career has been a lesson in beating the odds and carving her own unique path. Jones grew up in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and at the age of eight was told by a doctor that she would never become a tennis professional. She was born with a rare genetic condition, ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia (EED), which means that she is missing a finger on each hand and has three toes on her right foot and four toes on her left. It has required many surgeries over the years, but never deterred Jones’s drive and passion for her sport. Barely a year after the doctor delivered that prognosis, Jones moved to Barcelona to train at an academy and never looked back. Even through months of learning a new language, adapting to life away from her family on unfamiliar clay courts, and dealing with long-term injuries in her early years as a professional, Jones continued to strive for the elite. In 2025, she made it to a number of important milestones, not only winning four titles, but also finally breaking into the top 100 for the first time, reaching a career-high No. 71 in the world. Here, the 25-year-old talks about bringing a sense of fun to the British team, lessons from Billie Jean King, taco competitions on Tour, and how she learned to chase her goals for herself. ✨ What is the 'On Her Shoulders' interview series about? ✨ Launching through a conversation with the incomparable Billie Jean King herself, tennis journalist Molly McElwee speaks to players, captains, and leading figures in the women's World Cup of Tennis whose careers and stories are a source of inspiration to fans around the world.
