Her profile She is a Japanese mezzo-soprano/contralt singer named Makiko Narumi (14 January, 1969 - 30 April, 2002). She graduated from Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA) and then studied in The Juilliard School of Music staying in its Opera Center. During the time, she sang in Verdi's opera "Falstaff" with Seiji Ozawa, the solo part of G. Mahler's Symphony No.8 with James Conlon at Cincinnati May Festival and so on. She also appeared in Verdi's opera "Otello" with David Zinman in the Aspen Music Festival and was expected to have worldwide career. To our great regret, she died at the age of 33 from soft tissue sarcomas. It was a really shocking case not only for the Dean and professors of the School but also for those in TUA and her friends as well as her supporters who loved her music. She sang solo part of Handel's Messiah, J.S. Bach's Mass in h minor, Mendelssohn's Elijah etc. while she was a student of TUA. She sang many religious music with amateur chorus, among which the performances in St. Johannes Passion, St. Matthew's Passion and Mass in h minor were highly evaluated. She had two recitals in Tokyo too. The 39th number in St. Matthew's Passion with Tokyo J. S. Bach Chorus which is, I feel,to be her best singing.
