I stumbled upon this place by accident, somewhere outside Sparta, Wisconsin, where the roads get quieter and the landscape feels like it’s holding its breath. There were no big signs, no sense that something remarkable was waiting—just the feeling that I had drifted into the middle of nowhere. And then suddenly, there it was: the Paul and Matilda Wegner Grotto, rising gently from the land like a secret meant only for those willing to slow down. Known as the “Glass Church,” this incredible grotto was created between 1929 and 1942 by Paul and Matilda Wegner, a German-born couple with no formal artistic training—only vision, faith, and persistence. Built from concrete and decorated with thousands of pieces of glass, seashells, broken china, and found objects, the grotto tells a story of devotion and imagination. Every structure feels intentional, from the prayer garden and Jacob’s Well to the church, the ship, and the Crown of Righteousness. Standing there, it feels less like visiting a park and more like stepping into someone’s lifelong expression of belief and hope. It’s an unexpected place with a powerful history—quiet, beautiful, and unforgettable. Location: 7788 Daylight Rd, Sparta, WI 54656 Website: https://wanderingwisconsin.org/enviro...
