Upper Limb: Forearm | Nerves and Arteries of Anterior Compartment of the Forearm

The area of the upper limb that runs from the elbow joint to the wrist is known as the forearm. The radius and ulna are the two bones that make up the forearm anatomy. The anatomy of the upper limb bones has already been presented in a lecture here on sqadia.com. The forearm muscles are the main topic of this course. The muscular anatomy of the forearm is much larger than that of the arm. The forearm has a total of 19 muscles. There are separate compartments within the muscles. These compartments are: 🟠 Anterior Compartment of the Forearm 🟠 Posterior Compartment of the Forearm 🟠 Brachial Artery ▬ 📃 Upper Limb: Forearm The forearm extends between the wrist and elbow joints. The two bones of the forearm are Radius and Ulna. These two bones link together to form the superior and inferior radioulnar joints at both of their ends. A structure known as the interosseous membrane lies between the shafts of these two bones. ▬ 📜 Anterior Compartment There are five superficial muscles in the anterior compartment of the forearm. These are: 🔵 Pronator Teres 🔵 Flexor Carpi ulnaris 🔵 Palmaris Longus 🔵 Flexor Carpi Radialis 🔵 Flexor digitorum superficialis The function of these forearm muscles is that they are flexors. They are innervated by the median nerve except for the flexor carpi ulnaris which is innervated by the ulnar nerve. The deep forearm muscles of the Anterior Compartment are. 🔴 Flexor pollicis longus 🔴 Flexor digitorum profundus 🔴 Pronator quadratus The function of these muscles is easier to remember. These muscles are innervated by the anterior interosseous nerve, a branch of the median nerve. ▬ 📃 Nerve and Arteries of the Anterior Compartment In the anterior compartment of the forearm there are three nerves: 👉 Median nerve The median nerve supplies the muscles of the superficial muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm. 👉 Ulnar nerve Only the flexor carpi ulnaris is supplied by the ulnar nerve and part of the flexor digitorum superficialis. 👉 Anterior interosseous nerves The deep flexors of the forearm anatomy are supplied by this nerve. ▬ 📜 Posterior Compartment Seven muscles that originate from both the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and the supracondylar ridge are found in the superficial layer of the posterior compartment These muscles are: 🟣 Brachioradialis 🟣 Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus 🟣 Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis 🟣 Extensor Digitorum 🟣 Extensor Digiti Minimi 🟣 Extensor Carpi Ulnaris A collection of five muscles known as the deep posterior forearm muscles is found in the deep layer of the forearm's posterior compartment. These muscles are: 🟤 Supinator 🟤 Abductor Pollicis Longus 🟤 Extensor Pollicis Brevis 🟤 Extensor Pollicis Longus 🟤 Extensor Indicis In the lower arm, the radial nerve goes through the lateral intermuscular septum and onward into the cubital fossa. In front of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, the nerve then descends. It separates into shallow and deep branches at this level. 🟡 🟠 🔵 🟢 ⚫️ 🔴 🟣 🟤 ⚪️ ▬ 🎬 5500+ sqadia.com Medical Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 👩🏻‍⚕️ Accessible Medical Student Education 24/7/365 💡 Simplifying Medical Learning 💪 Study Hard, Dream Big, Achieve More
