3D Forward Looking Sonar for USV Applications

From the 2023-2024 CCOM/JHC-UNH OE Ocean Seminar Series—Matthew Zimmerman, the Chief Executive Officer of FarSounder, Inc.—presents, "3D Forward Looking Sonar for USV Applications." This talk was recorded on April 5, 2024 in the Jere A. Chase Ocean Engineering Lab at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. ABSTRACT The latest advancements in the application of commercial off the shelf (COTS) 3D forward looking sonar to USV platforms are discussed including use for whale detection, swarm navigation, and data sharing. BIO Since the founding of FarSounder in 2001, Matthew has driven the technical development and vision of FarSounder’s 3D Forward Looking Sonar technology. His motivation of decreasing the environmental impact of all types of ships, led to a new class of navigation products which enable yachts, research vessels, cruise ships and other exploration vessels to access the most exclusive locations with increased navigation safety. He currently serves as CEO of FarSounder and is a member of the IHO’s Crowd-Sourced Bathymetry Working Group (CSBWG).
