This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Along the Texas/Mexico border are 2,333 Colonias — unincorporated communities that lack water, sewage, and other critical infrastructures — with an estimated population of over 500,000. Contrary to popular belief, 88 to 97% are American citizens, and half are under the age of 21. Oscar relates examples of community engagement, community development, medical stereotypes, and research in these areas. Director of the Texas A&M Colonias Program, Oscar Muñoz leads a team of more than 60 with three regional offices and more than 40 community resource centers along the Texas border. Through this program, residents of the colonias have emerged as community leaders by continuing their education to help secure a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities. Oscar also leads the Texas A&M Water Filter Project primarily serving colonia residents, and rural and international communities in Ecuador, Bolivia, Mexico, and Guatemala. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
