Lao Language Lesson: Writing Lao

If you’re interested in learning how to write in Lao, rather than just read or even type, then this video will help you get started. Personally, I think the Lao script is beautiful and worth learning how to write well. The basic idea behind writing a Lao consonant is to start at the little circle and go from there. Some consonants have more than one circle, so it’s not always that simple. In this video, I’ll show you where to start each letter. When I was first learning to write Lao, I practiced by writing each letter over and over again, filling line after line on my paper until I felt the letters no longer looked like I was a five-year-old learning to write for the first time. It took months, so be patient and it will eventually look good. Even after you get it down, sometimes the letters don’t look just right. That’s normal. When compared to how my handwriting looks in English, I feel pretty good about how I write Lao, even when it’s not perfect. I’ll go through the consonants in order, then show you a full word at the end, including a consonant, vowel and tone marker.
