Unimetals Recycling (UK) Ltd, a major metals recycling firm that operated around 27–28 sites across the United Kingdom with roughly 650 employees, has entered compulsory liquidation after failing to secure the financing required to sustain its business and complete outstanding payments on a key acquisition. The company had previously agreed in 2024 to buy the UK operations of Sims Metal Management for about £195 million, aiming to become one of the country’s largest independent scrap metal recyclers. However, Unimetals struggled with cash flow as commodity prices weakened and an expected investor pulled out of a near-final funding round, leaving it unable to meet deferred payments tied to the deal. In the months leading up to liquidation, the business filed multiple notices of intention to appoint administrators while seeking new investment or a buyer, but these efforts did not result in a rescue deal. The winding-up order was formally made by a UK court in late November 2025, with the Official Receiver appointed as liquidator to manage the company’s dissolution and investigate its collapse. The liquidation has put around 650 jobs at risk and prompted support measures for affected employees and creditors, including guidance on redundancy claims and proof of debt submissions. Unimetals’ leadership expressed regret at the outcome, emphasizing attempts to work with stakeholders and manage the process responsibly, but ultimately acknowledged that no viable transaction materialised to secure the firm’s future.
