A raag is a structure of musical melody. There are 31 shudh raags and 31 mishrat raags in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Each raag is a section in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sri raag being the first raag. All the ‘shabads’ structured in Sri raag are found in this section, arranged chronologically with compositions of the Gurus first, followed by the baani of the Bhagats in that raag. Mishrat raag – Raags blended to create a raag with notes different from the main raags. For example : Raag Gauri Deepki in Sohela Sahib Baani is a combination of 2 raags. Raag Gauri Poorbi Deepki is a combination of 3 raags. Raag Gauri Guareri, is the first mixed raag in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. 11 different types of Gauri are included in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This Raag’s ascending notes are similar to Raag Hindol and Raag Sohni and the descending notes are similar to Raag Marva. In a nutshell, Raag Gauri Guareri is a combination of Raag Gauri, Hindol, Sohni, and Marva. It is a very melodious and unique raag. This raag is only found in Guru Granth Sahib Ji and was possibly created by our Gurus. There are 62 shabads in this Raag in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. These shabads are compositions of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Amardas Ji, Guru Ramdas Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Bhagat Kabir Ji and Bhagat Ravidas Ji.
