Feeling too young for a hip replacement is one thing. Being told you are too young for a hip replacement is another thing. Hip pain from hip arthritis (osteoarthritis) is so coming any aged population that is suffering from long standing hip pain. Hip pain from arthritis does not have to just solely be for those who are older. There are many risk factors such as hip dysplasia and hip impingement (Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome – FAI) that contribute as risk factors for OA signs and symptoms to develop earlier in the young adult who has hip pain. With that said, we don’t want everyone to go and have a hip replacement if indeed no needed. However there are many great opportunities that can arise from someone having a hip replacement. The decision whether it is a good option shoulder not solely be based on age. Hip replacements currently last 25 years give or take. 25 years ago I had hair, no grey beard and mobiles and the internet were barely if at all a thing. So I suspect the MAKO robot assisted hip level procedures and prosthesis used and completed now will likely last 30 years ++ ❇️Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is a type of hip replacement that involves capping the femoral head and preserving bone of the proximal femur. ✅The proposed advantages of hip resurfacing over conventional total hip arthroplasty are bone conservation, reproduction of anatomic hip biomechanics, greater implant stability, and assumed easier revision procedures. HOW LONG DO HIP REPLACEMENTS LAST? 97% up to 22 years (Kiran et al.,2019) 75-100% up to 15 years (Hart et al., 2019) 75% up to 22 years (Keeling et al., 2020) 58% up to 25% (Evans et al.,2019) 📝This is a topic I come across daily so I thought I would make a post on it. Here is some of the more recent evidence around hip survivorship with some long term follow ups. We have to be mindful though that who knows what the even longer term follow ups would be if we had that data. 📚These hips can be life changing and really last far longer then many people are aware.
