Filmed on Tuesday, May 30 2023, I drive around the village Colon, MI to see what's happening. The name "Colon" is said to have been derived from the name of an early settler in the area. Colon was settled in the 1830s and was originally named "Colon Village" after the nearby settlement of Colon Township. It was incorporated as a village in 1895. One of the most notable aspects of Colon is its reputation as the "Magic Capital of the World." The village has been a hub for magicians and magic enthusiasts for over 80 years. This status is attributed to Harry Blackstone Sr., a renowned magician who made Colon his hometown in the 1920s. Blackstone's presence attracted other magicians, and the community became a gathering place for magic performances, conventions, and workshops. Colon is the home of the Abbott Magic Company, founded by magicians Percy Abbott, an Australian and friend of Blackstone, and Recil Bordner, originally from Eaton, Ohio, in 1934. The company has a local store, showroom and a factory where magicians' supplies and new tricks are manufactured. Abbott Magic is well known among professional stage acts, with customers around the world. FAB Magic Company and the Sterlini Magic Manufacturing Company are also based in Colon. Each year, Colon hosts the Abbott's Magic Get-Together, a renowned magic convention that draws more than 1,000 magicians from around the globe. This event has been held annually since 1934 and includes magic shows, lectures, workshops, and a dealer's room where magicians can purchase new tricks and props. The Get-Together is a significant event in the magic community and contributes to Colon's reputation as a magical destination. The Colon High School teams are known as the "Magi", and the high school mascot is a white rabbit wearing a black top hat. Also, a few of the local shops exploit the "magic" theme in their titles. As of the census of 2020, there were 1,199 people living in the village, up from 1,173 in 2010. The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population. The median household income was $47,635 and 8.85% of the population lived below the poverty rate. #driving #travel #drivingtour
