Neuropsychiatry at Australia’s Royal Melbourne Hospital brings together a specialised multidisciplinary clinical team of clinicians, clinical researchers, patient and carer advocates dedicated to improving the lives of people with who have mental illness, cognitive impairment and neurological symptoms. This patient group fall through services gaps and frequently struggle to access diagnostic or treatment services as they are deemed ‘too hard’ or ‘too complex’. By working at the interface between psychiatry, neurology and medicine the team bridges the ‘great divide’ between psychiatry (mind) and neurology (brain) in a way which is unique internationally. This approach is exemplified by the multidisciplinary approach taken to diagnosing and treating patients with Young-onset Dementia. Treatment of course begins with diagnosis, and the RMH team lead the MiND study in order to determine novel biomarkers – like neurofilaments – that might enable us to diagnose mental illnesses earlier. This approach is also applied to dementia specifically, and funding from the Colonial Foundation might enable us to find a blood test for the disease. Treatment for these very challenging diseases is also key, and the team provide access to novel infusion treatments to people with Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). For mental illness like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the team have established a Deep Brain Stimulation therapy, which, in collaboration with patients, enables them to modulate settings for patients implanted with the device remotely. Through this work and more, the Neuropsychiatry at Royal Melbourne Hospital hope to continue to change and improve the lives of people with these challenging and underserved diseases in Australia, and beyond. https://www.neuropsychiatry.org.au
