Soprano: Nozomi Shimizu Baritone: Tomoki Nakagawa Mandolin: Takaaki Shibata Flute: Seiichiro Edo Saxophone: Tadayoshi Kusakabe Bass Clarinet: Nozomi Ueda Commissioned by Shibata Takaaki with the support of the Japan Mandolin Union and Osaka College of Music. Premiered on 13 April 2025 at the Aoyama Ongaku Kinenkan Barocksaal in Kyoto, Japan. Programme note: Batik is a traditional art form widely practiced in Southeast Asia that uses wax and dyes to create intricate patterns on cloth. “Sekar Jagad” is one of the common “motifs” or patterns being used, with origins in central Java, Indonesia. Translated as "flowers of the universe," it symbolizes the beauty and harmony found in diversity, as depicted in its patterns featuring islands of distinct subject matter, ranging from flowers to animals and landscapes. In recent years, my travels to Indonesia and my exploration of Singapore’s rich cultural tapestry have deepened my appreciation for batik. In writing this piece, I hope to encapsulate the diversity and spirit behind “Sekar Jagad” as a batik motif, weaving together musical features from various musical cultures. —Gu Wei, February 2025
