In 2023, we went on something of a world tour, filming back-to-back episodes of our new series, Local Joints. In early March, we took a road trip with photographer Austin Augie from his studio in Red Hook Brooklyn to his hometown of Muncie, Indiana—more specifically, to 111 Tattoo, a shop owned by his best friend. This was Augie’s local joint. Of all the memories from that drive, I’ll start at the earliest point in the trip. Crossing the Manhattan Bridge and rolling into Chinatown, we stopped at a red light. Augie rolled down his window and raised his camera toward an elderly man—his face mapped with tattoos, seated in a wheelchair, surrounded by hundreds of plastic bags. The kind of New York character most people glimpse in passing and forget, but who caught Augie’s attention for his raw, unfiltered story. He captured the moment instantly, drawn by the details and the story written in the scene. The man noticed, shot us a middle finger, and Augie just smiled—still looking through the lens, still seeing something worth remembering. It felt like the perfect snapshot of what the rest of our time with Augie would be like.
