Therapeutic human antibody against Dengue virus : Research Impact [by Mahidol]

Dengue fever, caused by Dengue virus (DENV) that consisted of 4 different serotypes transmitted to human by Aedes mosquito, become the world public health problem. World Health Organization estimated that half of the world populations live in Dengue endemic area. Until present, there has no specific drug for Dengue treatment, which this new drug needed to neutralize all 4 serotypes of DENV. So the researcher all over the world has tried to develop therapeutic product against DENV. From the collaboration between Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University and Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University with the supported from Japan Science and technology agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the world first neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies (NhuMAb) against all 4 serotypes of DENV was developed. This NhuMAb could significantly reduce the mortality of Dengue challenged mice and dramatically reduced the virus from 10 Million to be at zero within 2 days. This NhuMAbs was patented in 11 countries (USA, Japan, Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippine, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand). Now these NhuMAb is under the preparation step for human clinical trial (phase 1). Researchers at CEAR., MU. has strong believed that this NhuMAb will become the new drug for treatment of Dengue in the near future.
