Claudio Sgroi's blend is composed only of Congeda and Jalapa tobaccos. In this review, we used the 6 x 44 Fino but the blend is available in other vitolas, too. 03:29 Look & Feel The Tierra Volcán has a few refined veins with a perfectly straight roll and no soft spots. It was a firm spring when pinched with a distinctive cacao nib hue that delivers an oily sheen. Its aromas consist of salted caramel, musky labdanum, and cinnamon. 04:14 Prelight The pre-light reveals a pleasant draw with just enough resistance. In terms of flavours, you can experience nutmeg, birch tar, and rooibos tea on the dry draw. 04:36 Tasting Notes The first third opens with a mineral-heavy bouquet of terracotta clay, cinnamon, and charred bay leaf. The second third is more verbose with hints of iron oxide, producing a metallic rusty flavour. this is accompanied by espresso and dark chocolate. the final third unveils notes of black pepper, agarwood oud, and saffron spice. Although complex, it's not inaccessible. It has a soft creamy mouthfeel with balanced tongue and palate stimulation. It doesn't cause too much salivation or dryness. Each third offered distinctive evolutions and changes in flavour. The finish is lingering and the residual scent is quite pleasant. 07:49 Burn The draw remains consistent throughout the experience. The smoking temperature remains cool if you smoke slowly. However, being a narrow ring gauge, it can heat up if you rush. The burn line is slightly wavy but doesn't require any touch-ups. As it's a thin cigar, the ash can get flaky. 08:44 Overall Experience The band is cleanly and elegantly presented and the logo is stylish thanks to a recent facelift. The reverse of the band is also stamped with the rolling date, which is a nice touch. The cigars are delivered in a wooden box with a sliding lid. These help keep prices down as they're not as expensive but they're not quite as attractive. Nevertheless, it's still nicely presented and features a hand-written batch code on the back. In terms of value, the Tierra Volcán is decently priced. A single should be around $10 whereas a box of 12 is typically around $130. Given that it's a Nicaraguan pura made by a boutique brand, it's a good price. It's also a very versatile cigar that can be enjoyed for a variety of occasions. It can be taken to special and formal occasions or simply enjoyed with friends. 12:16 Pairings The cigar would go well with cured ham like prosciutto or jambon de bayonne. Otherwise, consider dark chocolate by Argencove, which is another artisanal brand in Granada. Alternatively, grilled prime rib steak prepared in a marinade would be excellent as well. As for beverages, a Flor de Caña rum, such as the 18-year-old, would be a good choice. But something like a Diplomatico would be fine, too. Otherwise, consider an Islay single malt, which would bring out the cigar's minerality. Finally, espresso or ristretto would pair well with the flavours of the cigar.
