Here is my guide for what to do BEFORE you're diagnosed. If you've found the process of getting an accurate diagnosis to be frustrating and unclear, then this is the perfect video for you. Take notes and come back if you need to! 1. Get a notebook. Use this to jot down your symptoms and any solutions that you encounter. Because fibromyalgia diagnoses require at least 3 months of consistently experienced symptoms, being able to capture the symptoms over a period of time will help you tremendously. Record the date, the way you feel overall, what kind of symptoms you're experiencing (pain, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, depression, etc.,) and where are you feeling the symptoms. 2. Determine whether your primary care physician specializes in any chronic pain/chronic conditions by researching your doctor online. If you don't have a physician that specializes in chronic conditions, then seek out a doctor that possesses the kind of specialties that make it possible for him/her to make an accurate initial determination. 3. Make two doctors appointments: one as quickly as you can, and make a 2nd follow-up appointment 3 months after the initial appointment OR 3 months after you begin to experience chronic symptoms consistently. You want the 2nd visit if you haven't already gotten an acceptable diagnosis or if you haven't already been referred to a specialist (like a rheumatologist, orthopedist or neurologist). 4. Review your insurance benefits. Learn whether you need a referral before getting a specialist, or if you can directly schedule an appointment within your network of physicians. Given the wait times for working with specialists, you'll want to get scheduled as soon as you can. 5. Learn the tests that you will given in order to get to your diagnosis. Some of the tests you can expect to get are: widespread pain index; the sensitive point test (may or may not be used by your doctor: it is no longer considered very reliable, but can support an overall determination); complete blood count test*, urinalysis, erythrocyte sedimentation rate test; c-reactive protein test; thyroid testing that assesses T4 and TSH**; rheumatoid factor testing; anti-nuclear antibody testing; EGFR; Vitamin D, B12 levels, A1C levels (pre-diabetes/diabetes testing) *Don't be surprised if you are initially recommended to increase your iron: many anemia symptoms mimic the symptoms of fibromyalgia **Some people will want to look into additional thyroid testing to cover all bases. The basic testing may not catch other issues, such as Graves Disease (a condition marked by abnormal T3 hormone levels).
