Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Dawn Butler was an Equality and Race officer at the GMB and was also an advisor to Ken Livingstone on employment and social issues. Prior to be elected the New Statesman named her as the most promising feminist under thirty-five. Elected as the Member of Parliament for Brent South on 5 May 2005 (succeeding former Cabinet Minister Paul Boateng with a majority of 58.8% of the vote), Dawn made an elegant maiden speech, in which she described her constituency as a shining example of integration at its best. She was very quickly promoted as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Health Minister Jane Kennedy in November 2005, and was appointed to the committee for Modernisation of the House of Commons. In 2006 Dawn was appointed Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs and to the committee for Children, Schools and Families. On 12 September, 2008, Dawn was appointed Assistant Government Whip for the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). Since elected Dawn has been a passionate campaigner for young people, fulfilling her campaign pledge of being a voice for youth in Parliament. In addition to her Parliamentary role Dawn was appointed Labour Vice-Chair for youth, setting up the My Life My Say programme which encourages young people to get involved in politics. She is a honorary president for the British Youth Council and has succeeded in establishing the Youth Parliament and the Youth Capital/Opportunity Funds in Brent South. Dawn made her mark on history by becoming the first ever Black woman to be elected to a British Government. In 2009 she launched Bernie's List which is an initiative to help elect Black and Asian individuals. She is the Labour Friends of India vice-chair and has successfully campaigned for an annual Slavery Memorial Day and for the teaching of black history to be fully mainstreamed in UK schools. In March 2009, Dawn was named MP of the Year (Women in Public Life Awards), she lives in the constituency and can see Wembley Stadium from her window. Her recreations include salsa and spending time with her family.
