CCC 87 Mindful of Christ's words to his apostles: "He who hears you, hears me", the faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms. Today we hear about Pope Clement X who was the 239th man to serve as pope and the 10th to choose Clement as his name. Born as Emilio Bonaventura Altieri in 1590. Altieri earned his doctorate in law from the Roman College in 1611. After completing his education, he worked for the Supreme Court of the Church. In 1624, Altieri was ordained a priest. During the papacy of Innocent X, he was made Naples’ papal nuncio, where he maintained the position for many years. In the conclave after the death of Pope Clement lX, Altieri was elected in April of 1670 and took the name Clement X in honor of his benefactor, Pope Clement IX. Papacy During his reign, the threat of Turkish domination in Poland was imminent and of grave concern to the pontiff. Saddled with internal problems, Poland reached out to the papacy. Pope Clement organized papal finances and gave Poland considerable aid against Turkish invasion. He decorated the bridge of Sant' Angelo with the ten statues of angels made of Carrara marble and it is still to be seen there. To Pope Clement we owe the two beautiful fountains which adorn the Piazza of St. Peter's church near the tribune, where a monument has been erected to his memory. Nevertheless, the Bullarium Romanum contains many evidences of his religious activity, among which may be mentioned, the canonization of Sts. Cajetan, Philip Benitius, Francis Borgia, Louis Bertrand, and Rose of Lima ; also the beatification of Pope Pius V, John of the Cross, and the Martyrs of Gorcum in Holland. Known for his great charity, he did much for the poor through almsgiving and social legislation. He tried to improve agriculture and foster industry in the Papal States. Pope Clement X died at eighty-six years of age from the agonies of gout in July 1676. His tomb is in St. Peter’s Basilica. His papal successor was Innocent XI.
