Charlie Megira was a beautiful and strange soul. He grew up in the 70s in Northern Israel, close to the Territories, but his dreams were all of texan paysages and 60s rock n roll. Charlie taught himself how to play the guitar while serving as a cook in the army. And never lost the sense of fragile beauty of each picked note. He wore ridiculous sunglasses and rockabilly blazers and pompadour haircuts which he thought to be the epitome of realness. And indeed he was painfully real until the very end. In 2016, with major record deals already coming his way, he hung himself in an apartment in Berlin. When he was found, his guitar was plugged in, his effects pedals were on, and his amp was buzzing. I recorded a cover of one of Megira’s most charming songs, Smile Now, Cry Later. The vocal on the original recordings sinks in waves of reverberation. I made an attempt to work out the lyrics.
