This little wooden village was originally built in 1979 as the set for the musical film Popeye, starring Robin Williams as Popeye. More than forty wooden buildings were constructed here in Anchor Bay, creating the fictional town of Sweethaven. When the filming ended, the set remained — and today it welcomes visitors from all over the world. Walking into the village feels like stepping into a cartoon. The colourful houses lean in every direction, wooden walkways wind between them, and everywhere you look there are little details from the world of Popeye. One of the first places to explore is the Bakery, where you can imagine the villagers preparing their daily bread. Just nearby you’ll find the Post Office and Dentist, two more quirky buildings that perfectly capture the playful style of the village. Climbing up to the Firehouse lookout is definitely worth it. From the top you get a beautiful view over the rooftops of the village and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea surrounding Anchor Bay. The Mayor’s Office gives another fun glimpse into the fictional life of Sweethaven, while the Popeye Comic Museum takes visitors back through the long history of the famous sailor and his adventures. In the Movie Information Room, you can learn more about how this entire village was built for the film and see behind-the-scenes details about the production. One of the most entertaining parts of the visit is meeting the characters themselves. During our visit we even met Olive Oyl, and throughout the day the actors perform short interactive shows that involve the audience. These playful performances bring the whole village to life and make the experience especially fun for families. After exploring the houses, it’s time for a short break at the Tipsy Bar, a perfect spot to relax for a moment and enjoy the seaside atmosphere. Nearby you can also visit the Olive Oyl House and the small cinema, where clips from the movie and other short films are sometimes shown. But perhaps the most magical part of Popeye Village is its setting. The colourful wooden houses sit right on the edge of Anchor Bay, surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water and dramatic rocky cliffs. It’s hard to resist stopping for photos — the views are beautiful from almost every angle. As we leave the village, there are still a few attractions near the exit area, including a children’s obstacle course, a mini-golf area, and a restaurant where visitors can grab something to eat or drink before heading back. Before finishing the visit, we walked up to a viewpoint above the village — and this might just be the best view of all. From here you can see the entire colourful film set nestled inside the bay, with the endless blue Mediterranean stretching out behind it. If you’re visiting Malta, Popeye Village is a wonderfully unique stop — part film history, part theme park, and part spectacular coastal viewpoint.
