Hello everyone, I'm pleased to share this short film about the life of perhaps the most important Arab musician and music thinker of the 20th Century, Shaykh 'Ali Al Darwish from Aleppo. He was well-known for encyclopedic knowledge of maqamat, their rules, as well as hundreds of muwashahat. I'm glad to have studied some music under a few musicians who directly descend from his musical lineage, but of course, the path is extremely long and I can only wish to possess even a quarter of his wisdom. Due to the influence of his students in Egypt, Tunisia, who built impressive legacies of their own through pop music in the 20th Century (like Umm Kulthoum, etc) and spread their own philosophies and theory, his own story has been obscured. This is further complicated by the fact that basic maqam knowledge available to an Anglophone audience has been filtered through the lens of post-1932 Arabic Music Conference voices. As such, I decided that it would be good to translate this very short film and make it publicly available. Additionally, I've started compiling and translating his manuscripts and writings and I hope to make this knowledge available soon. Of course, I still have a lot to do to finish the Rachidia in Tunis first 🤣. I do not own the rights to the film itself, and I've shared it under a fair-use idea.
