Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time and the pinnacle of Miles Davis’s career, is the masterpiece that heralded the dawn of "Modal Jazz" alongside pianist Bill Evans. By breaking away from traditional jazz conventions, the album is permeated with a profoundly meditative and static atmosphere. However, within this dominant flow, there is one track that provides a distinct breath of fresh air: "Freddie Freeloader." This is the only track on the album where Wynton Kelly, rather than Bill Evans, takes the helm at the piano. It was likely a strategic choice, as Kelly was deemed better suited to express that deep, soulful blues feel and swing characteristic of Black musical heritage. Listening to the track, it becomes clear that casting Wynton Kelly for this specific piece was a stroke of genius. While every musician delivers a brilliant solo marked by their own individuality, the highlight is undoubtedly Cannonball Adderley. While others unravel the blues as if lost in deep contemplation, Adderley pours out his signature bold, exuberant blues style, providing the perfect finishing touch. The moment his solo begins, the very air surrounding the song shifts completely. This is precisely why "Freddie Freeloader," rather than "So What," remains my favorite track on this album. The video begins at the end of John Coltrane’s solo and transitions directly into Cannonball Adderley’s solo. instagram / staticvinyls
