For more information see the website at: http://www.alliedarmament.com/ This is a product review of the X-91 50 round drum for the HK-91/PTR-91 rifle's in .308 caliber, but this is actually a product based almost identically to Heckler and Koch G8 drum that Germany used for their border guards. During the 1994-2004 ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, the drums were imported for law enforcement use to Gordon Miller (HK specialist) in a quantity of about 400 units. Because HK 91's were limited in law enforcement inventory's the drums made it to the civilian market after the ban lifted in 2004 at a retail price of $1500 or more! It's the only existing military spec .308 drum magazine in existence. It took Allied Armament Inc. about 3yrs of development and testing to repeat the performance and improve it, and the product is 100% made in the USA. Its meets 922r compliance as well as ITAR compliance. Xs-Products took over the drum about July 2010 and has been manufactured since the beginning of this year and have sold about a 1000 units. current retail is $230. The are also in development of new complimentary products in testing like our X-25 which will greatly broaden the sales spectrum (think beta mag for .308). The product initially was based almost identically to the G8 however they found flaws with the product that needed to be rectified. The original drum had a dual plunger system for which was convient to take apart, however inconsistencies could lead to larger gaps in the shells closing. They developed a more robust screw down system that would eliminate shell seperation and help keep debree from getting into the system. It also had a plastic front handwheel and plastic internal links, however great and all, they wanted this to survive a fire so all components got manufactured out of high quality billet aluminum (to help justify our lifetime warranty). The next thing they did was investigate into high tech friction reducing paints, They spent months testing different paints. The original drums were painted in a Silicon guncoate, but the later ones now use the much more advanced Cerakote (r) for which requires no lubrication to operate.
