(11 Jul 1998) Natural Sound Half a million ravers have danced their way through Berlin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Love Parade. Ten years ago it started with just 150 people dancing behind a Volkswagen van. Now the Love Parade has become the world's biggest open air rave, a musical blowout in the heart of Berlin. Berlin's annual Love Parade attracts young people from all over Europe to dance their way down the city's boulevards. The ravers parade behind 50 or so musical floats equipped with bass deafening sound systems. they start at two opposite points, the Brandenburger gate and the Ernst Reuter Platz. At the Victory column the ravers meet for a final blast of techno music - a celebration of fast repetitive beats. Hotels restaurants, bars and dance clubs also celebrate as the event brings in an estimated 100 (m) million dollars U-S. "One world, one future" is the message of the Love Parade for 1998. The parade has its critics: Environmentalists say trees and soil are damaged and some city officials complain about post-parade cleanup and repairs. This year, the Berlin administrative court ordered the parade organiser - the multimedia firm Planetcom - to place dozens of litter bins along the parade route through the Tiergarten park. Last year, city officials had to pick up 264 tons of litter, as well as hosing down the grass. Usually the rave has always enjoyed good weather. But even a heavy rain shower during the parade was not going to shut down the street party - ravers just continued dancing and singing until sunshine returned.
