2025 SAIEE Bernard Price Memorial Lecture: "THE ENVISAGED JOURNEY TOWARDS A COMPETITIVE ELECTRICITY TRADING MARKET - POLICY PATHWAYS, CHALLENGES, AND PROSPECTS" presented by MR. THEMBANI BUKULA The restructuring of South Africa's electricity sector, through the unbundling of Eskom and the integration of Independent Power Producers (IPPs), aims to create a competitive electricity market. This transition offers opportunities for efficiency and investment but also poses challenges in governance and market stability. A key policy priority is to develop a regulatory framework that ensures open access and transparent rules, while protecting vulnerable consumers and preventing the emergence of dominant players. Success will depend on striking a balance between sector development, innovation, and competition, supported by effective governance and regulatory coherence across various policy domains. The 74th Bernard Price Memorial Lecture was held at the Senate Room of Senate House at the University of Witwatersrand on 18 September 2025 from 6pm to 8pm. The event was also live streamed to the SAIEE Centre's around South Africa. SAIEE © 2025
