I wrote this topical song in late April and early May of this year, and performed it a couple of times back then before moving on to other things. This past week it occurred to me that this song is still as relevant now as it was when I first wrote it. So I (figuratively) "dusted it off" and performed it as the opening song of last week's Yellow Door Hootenanny that I host on Friday evenings in downtown Montreal. As is usual for me, there are some differences between the different performances, since I rarely have any firm and fixed arrangements, and I always try to maintain spontaneity in my performances.. The biggest change was inviting the audience to join in on the chorus, with which they did an admirable job (mostly non-verbal vocalizing since the chorus is probably too long to be able to pick up all the lyrics "on the fly" without having heard the song before). As for other changes, this time around I'm playing in a different key that's more suited to my vocal range, using a slightly different tuning, and playing on a different banjo, this one strung with steel strings while I previously had been using synthetic gut strings. I'm quite happy with my performance here, especially since I hadn't played it in more than 6 months, and didn't really have a chance to practice it other than checking if my fingers still knew where to go just prior to performing it. This was played on a 1927 Whyte Laydie Banjo tuned dCFCE (a C9 chord), with a capo at the 5th fret of the 4 long strings, changing the tuning to dFCFA (either an F6 or a Dm7 chord, depending on context). It was recorded on 7 November 2025 at Montreal's Yellow Door Hootenanny.
