It's 1644, the year CHRISTMAS WAS CANCELLED in England. But who were the people who stole Christmas and why did they do it? The answer is the Puritans, who were led by Oliver Cromwell and locked in a civil war at the time with the royalist party led by Charles I. As for why they hated the celebrations traditionally associated with 25 December, well it has to do with paganism, devil-worship, anti-Catholicism and general licentiousness, but you’ll have to watch this festive documentary from History Calling to get the full story. This video will not just explain who cancelled Christmas and why, but what life was like for the English population during the years without Christmas (because this ban wasn’t a one time thing), how Christmas was celebrated in the past and how some who refused to be cowed by the Puritans instigated the fight to save Christmas during the years of the Civil War and the Interregnum and what the consequences of disobedience were. We’ll also look at how much to blame for this whole situation Oliver Cromwell was. Did he really take the concept of being a Scrooge to a whole new level by banning the festive fun, or has he been unfairly maligned by those who say that the period of time when Christmas was illegal was all his fault? Finally, it may shock you to know that the Puritan-led Parliament in England wasn’t even the first to ban Christmas. The Presbyterians in Scotland beat them to it in 1640 and as it was only in the mid-20th century that Scottish attitudes to Christmas finally aligned with those south of its border, some even claim that Christmas was illegal in Scotland for nearly 400 years! To hear all the details, snuggle up and let’s head back to the 17th century British Isles, a time when even holly and ivy were seen as a threat!
