Squid Nebula (Ou4) is one of those targets that looks unreal the first time you see it — and it’s also one of the easiest ways to get humbled by faint signal and gradients. In this processing video, I take you from stacked data to a finished image of the Squid Nebula in the HOO palette (Hydrogen-Alpha + Oxygen-III). You’ll see the full workflow I use to bring out the delicate OIII “tentacles,” control noise, protect star color, and keep the background clean without crushing the faint outer structure. Equipment mentioned: UGREEN NAS: https://amzn.to/4ch9z9u Thunderbolt 4 enclosure for SSD: https://amzn.to/3OFoE85 SSD: https://amzn.to/40Zm1p0 Artec 250: http://bit.ly/artec250 RST300 (mount): https://bit.ly/3MLOXYU 6200MM Pro: https://bit.ly/3MxrXk3 Antlia LRGB filters: https://bit.ly/4akincd Antlia 4.5nm filters: https://bit.ly/4kzksFR What’s covered in this edit: • HOO combination (Ha + OIII) and color mapping choices • Stretching strategy for faint OIII signal • Noise reduction without destroying nebulosity • Contrast enhancement and local detail (without overcooking it) • Star handling: star reduction, star color protection, and recombination • Final color balance and finishing passes If you’ve ever struggled with weak OIII data or ended up with a cyan mess and gray stars, this one is for you.
