1. Countdown resumes for March 13 launch of Space Shuttle Discovery Jay Barbree reports on the expected launch of the third space shuttle mission since the Challenger disaster in 1986. Postponed from February 18, mission STS-29 will deploy the final component of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS). Scenes for the 1990 IMAX movie “Blue Planet” will be filmed during this flight. Barbree will become the only journalist to have covered every manned American space flight mission, starting with Freedom 7 in 1961 and ending with the final space shuttle flight in 2011. 2. Passengers scramble for steeply discounted fares on Eastern Airlines, endure long delays $1 bil. in debt and losing $1 mil. per day, Eastern has been insisting that machinists accept pay and benefits cuts. In response, the airline’s unionized mechanics, pilots, and flight attendants went on strike on March 4. After filing for bankruptcy protection on March 9, it began using non-union workers. To lure back passengers, fares on shuttle flights between Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. have been slashed from $69 to $12 on weekends and from $99 to $49 on weekdays. In October, real estate magnate Donald Trump (later the 45th and 47th President of the United States) agreed to purchase the shuttle but the sale is stalled by a union lawsuit which will be dismissed in May. Eastern will succumb to bankruptcy in 1991. The Trump Shuttle will merge with the USAir Shuttle in 1992. 3. American Catholic bishops confer with Holy Father in Rome for first time since 1883 Thirty-six cardinals and archbishops met with Pope John Paul II and his closest advisors for four days to discuss what the Holy See perceives as a departure from orthodoxy in the practice of Catholicism in the U.S., particularly in regards to abortion, divorce, and contraception. BBC Vatican correspondent David Willey reports that the prelates were told that they must teach standard church doctrine. This theme was enforced by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head of the Vatican office to preserve doctrinal purity, who will succeed John Paul in 2005 as Pope Benedict XVI. 4. Casualties in opening campaign of the Afghan civil war The Battle of Jalalabad began on March 6. The mujahideen are intent on seizing the airport to use it as a base to attack the capital, Kabul, but they will be repelled by forces of the communist government that the Soviet Union supported before it completed its withdrawal from its nine-year military incursion on February 15. The mujahideen will ultimately prevail when the Islamic State of Afghanistan is founded in 1992 but the tribal nation will remain in a perpetual state of internal warfare. 5. NBC Radio’s Paul Henderson reports on the efforts of Dr. Floyd Malveaux, associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University and founder of the Urban Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, to determine why inner city children are especially vulnerable to illness and death from asthma. 6. FBI investigating bombing of a minivan driven by the wife of the captain of the USS Vincennes Yesterday a pipe-bomb exploded under the vehicle driven by Sharon Rogers at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive in San Diego. The car was destroyed but she escaped unharmed. Her husband Captain Will Rogers III commanded the USS Vincennes in July 1988 when it misidentified and shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing 290 civilians. Many presume the attack was retaliation, perhaps ordered by the Iranian government. Later, a theory will emerge that the motive may have sprung from a personal vendetta that may have involved an extramarital affair. The case will never be solved, however. 7. Investigation of the crash of Air Ontario Flight 1363 continues The plane, a Fokker F28-1000 Fellowship, crashed on take-off from Dryden Regional Airport yesterday due to the accumulation of ice and snow on its wings.
