We’ve captured the quiet beauty of Arderne Gardens, one of Cape Town’s most serene green spaces nestled in the heart of Claremont. Whether you’re a long-time local or new to the area, this short film offers a peaceful glimpse into the charm, history, and natural wonder that makes the Southern Suburbs so special. Take a moment to unwind—and fall in love with your neighbourhood all over again. A Glimpse into the Past of Arderne Gardens: Established in 1845 by English timber merchant Ralph Henry Arderne, Arderne Gardens began as part of his private estate, known as "The Hill." Arderne, an avid plant collector, sourced exotic trees from around the world—India, Australia, Mauritius, and beyond—creating one of the most diverse and unique tree collections in the southern hemisphere. After his death, his son Henry continued his father’s botanical legacy, eventually opening the gardens to the public. Today, many of the trees planted during their lifetimes still stand, including some of the largest recorded specimens in South Africa, such as the enormous Morton Bay Fig and the Norfolk Island Pine. The gardens became a public park in the early 20th century and are now managed by the City of Cape Town in partnership with the Friends of the Arderne Gardens. Located in the heart of Claremont, this peaceful sanctuary has become a beloved retreat for locals—perfect for quiet walks, wedding photos, and moments of reflection beneath the canopy of rare trees. It’s not just a park; it’s a living piece of Cape Town’s heritage.
