A Philosophy of Finitude: Lessons from the Humanities

A presentation given by Edmund Pellegrino, MD on Nov. 2, 1990 at Loma Linda University. Dr. Pellegrino begins with claim that philosophical assumptions undergird politics, sociology, and economics in medical discussions. He emphatically states that relating to those who are experiencing aging and dying is not an abstract question. He then critiques approaches based on economics and the reduction of finitude from a philosophical construct to a practical setting of limits. Finally, he concludes by discussing the need for a fuller term of finitude, the incompleteness of philosophical theories, and the need for an ethics of rationing.
