Hi friends, in this video we’re answering the question “Why don’t extremely premature infants survive?”. To understand the answer to this question, we will get our bearings by looking at fetal lung development and formation before defining what alveoli are and what their role is in gas exchange. Finally, we are going to look at surfactant and how this relates to lung formation and the alveoli’s structure and function. In short, babies born before 21-22 weeks can’t survive because the very few alveoli that have developed and participate in gas exchange tend to collapse rather than fill with air because they lack surfactant. 00:00 Big Idea 01:13 Overview 01:38 Lung Formation 02:57 Alveoli 04:49 Surfactant 05:59 Bringing Everything Together I’m Anna and I am a critical care registered nurse.
