Court TV Discussion of Media and First Hearing of Tyler Robinson, Charlie Kirk's Alleged Murderer

On the Court TV docket this morning was Tyler Robinson's first appearance in his criminal case for the murder of Charlie Kirk. The first questions concerned media in the courtroom. Dating back to 2012 when I had my first televised trial, I have seen the good and bad of cameras in the courtroom. It is overwhelmingly more good than bad, especially in cases where transparency is a must. I also made a point in the show, which will be lost because this is just one segment of the show. The prior segment was on Luigi Mangione and featured an author discussing his reputation as a hero or "Robin Hood" for killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Murder is not heroic. Tyler Robinson and Luigi Mangione are very similar in a lot of ways- they both (allegedly) MURDERED because of outrage and disgust over their victim's wealth and politics. Both believed their victims were evil. Both left behind victims, including children. I presented the question about why some who said, "good," to Brian Thompson's death were not equally as gross as those saying it about Charlie Kirk. And yet, the First Amendment is there to protect it all- or it should be. One line in the preamble of the Constitution that I want to emphasize is the duty of the government to, "insure domestic tranquilly." It's failing miserably. These were both assassinations and datapoints we as a society are at literal war with each other. As I said in the press conference this week, all political speech is protected. And our leaders are weaponizing it and certainly don't want domestic tranquility. A tranquil population doesn't vote out of fear or disdain. Murderers are murderers.
