There is an area of psychological research that particularly fascinates me: humans’ ability to predict the future. Despite how bad we sapiens are at making accurate predictions, we continue to do so with great confidence. But science gives us another way to make predictions that does not involve a crystal ball. Instead, we can use statistics and research to make some pretty good predictions about how our fellow homo sapiens might act or respond. This technique of prediction is called linear regression and it works because we know the great secret about prediction: the best predictor of future behavior is…past behavior.
