We were Group #44. The expedition began with a steep descent into the world’s second-largest canyons. The silence, scale, and views from the top were unreal. Still getting used to our heavy backpacks, we scrambled over boulders and felt the true remoteness of this vast landscape. The canyon walls towered around us while the sun painted everything in gold, blending our silhouettes with those of the quiver trees on every ridge we passed. The only sounds were your footsteps and the call of distant birds. It was humbling, challenging, and completely unforgettable. We were lucky that the Fish River was in full flow, especially after Namibia was gripped in a terrible drought for the past three years. Most of the year, when the river dissipates, this adventure can easily become Dog Eats Dog if daily water rations run out. We had no problems drinking unfiltered water from the river, but the flowing current meant more river crossings. Trekking through the vast, rugged beauty of Namibia’s Fish River Canyon, Africa’s largest canyon and one of the world’s great wilderness hikes. Spanning over 160 kilometers in length and plunging 500 meters deep, the canyon offers a dramatic landscape of winding rock formations, dry riverbeds, and endless horizons. This five-day journey covering 70 kilometers of the gorge challenges the body, clears the mind, and rewards every step with a raw, unfiltered connection to nature. On day 5, the last stretch of the Fish River Canyon hike unfolded like a quiet farewell. After days immersed in raw wilderness, the final leg took us across vast, open plains, where the dramatic cliffs slowly receded and the sound of the river softened. The terrain flattened, and the silence deepened. A stark contrast to the rugged days before. Our feet were sore, our shoulders sun-kissed, and the rhythm of our steps echoed against the last cliffs of the canyon. It was a moment heavy with reflection, triumph, and the bittersweet feeling of leaving something ancient behind. As the hot desert air began to shimmer, a distant dam wall appeared on the horizon. The endpoint at Ai-Ais. Civilisation. No more Alfredo pasta with dehydrated mushrooms! Then, a sign: "Cold Beer in 1km." We had made it. In the distance, we heard the ringing of a bell. They had seen us coming. As we walked into the resort, staff and campers clapped their hands. Music played in our minds. What an experience! It was an emotional finish. Our journey didn’t end with a dramatic summit, but with the quiet relief of survival, arrival, and the kept promise of cold beer and a long soak in the warm, healing waters of Ai-Ais. Thank you to my fellow adventurers for making this experience unforgettable.
