17 years ago, I was 21 years old, I loved this street. I had no money, yet Thamel felt strangely more familiar than Bangkok’s Khao San Road. It was a time before 3D printers, before AI, before smartphones — when everything, except the internet cafés, was still analog. The exchange rate was always better at small money changers than at the airport. Shops were filled with high-end secondhand mountaineering gear that had drifted in from somewhere. Bob Marley and Jack Johnson played through dusty speakers, while pirated Buena Vista Social Club CDs were proudly on display. Deeper in the alleys, rows of Indian sewing machines clattered away, stitching patches onto T-shirts for travelers who wanted to commemorate themselves. It was an age when souvenirs were handmade, not printed. Now, those small shops are slowly disappearing, replaced by printed T-shirts and young local brands. Remembering those days, I stepped into the shop of a tailor who’s been sewing for forty years, and asked him to stitch a single piece for me.
