Meet Ellen, a nursing student in our Charlotte ABSN program. This is her career change story on why she decided to make the transition from teacher to nurse. Ellen had always wanted to be a pediatrician. Once she entered college, however, she quickly learned that medical school wasn’t for her. So instead, she graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. And with her heart still set on working with kids, she spent her first five years out of college working as a high school science teacher. While she enjoyed teaching, Ellen missed the idea of working in healthcare. Not knowing what area of healthcare to focus on, she spoke to doctors, nurses, and physician assistants, ultimately deciding that nursing was the best fit for her. “Not to say I wouldn’t be happy as a doctor or physician assistant, but it was nursing that really ignited my passion,” she said. “I wanted to have that personal bond with the patient and do more hands-on work.” When it came time to make the transition from teacher to nurse, Ellen chose for our 16-month ABSN program in Charlotte. “My admissions counselor was one of the main reasons I decided on Northeastern,” she said. Ellen, who relocated to Charlotte from Scranton, never planned to leave Pennsylvania but thought it might be cool to try something new and apply to Northeastern. “It’s ended up being the best decision I’ve made,” she noted. “It’s an accelerated program, which may seem daunting to a lot of people, but it’s manageable, so don’t be afraid to try it.” If you’re interested in making the transition from teacher to nurse, visit https://absn.northeastern.edu/acceler... to learn more about our 16-month ABSN program in Charlotte, North Carolina, or near Boston, Massachusetts.
