Sunnyvale ISD High School Additions / WRA Architects

It has been over ten years now since the citizens of Sunnyvale authorized a bond to build the Town’s first high school. In those ten years, Sunnyvale High School has become a focal point of the community, and its students have excelled in academics, fine arts, and athletics. In 2017, Sunnyvale authorized another bond to expand the high school, to keep up with the growth in student population, and to support the district’s vision for education in the 21st century. The first phase in this project will be the construction of a new cafeteria in the area between the student parking lot and the existing cafeteria on the southeast side of the building. The existing exterior colonnade along the glass wall of the cafeteria will be enclosed and will serve as a student commons and additional dining area. The new cafeteria itself will also serve as a storm shelter for the campus. The existing cafeteria will be converted into a dedicated performance auditorium in phase 2. Phase 2 will also include the construction of a new 42,000 square foot classroom addition at the north end of the existing classroom wing. This will effectively double the high school’s academic classroom space. This unique new environment includes 14 classrooms and 8 labs for STEAM programs and Career and Technical education curricula. The lab spaces are grouped with clusters of classrooms around large open areas for collaboration and independent research and study. A new counseling center will be located in the heart of the classroom addition, adjacent to the existing classroom wing. Here, counseling services will be more accessible to students, allowing career and college planning to become an integral part of student life. With the completion of the new cafeteria, the existing cafetorium, which has served the dual purposes of dining hall and performance space for 10 years, will be converted into a dedicated auditorium for musical and theatrical performances. Special attention is being given to acoustics, audio-visual and theater lighting systems. This space will give students in the district’s music and drama programs a taste of real-world experience.
