In a significant breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, a second machete believed to have been used in the crime was recovered on Tuesday during a reconstruction of the murder scene at the Weisawdong parking lot at Sohra. The recovery came after the accused disclosed that two weapons were used in the brutal killing. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducted a detailed reconstruction across five locations — from Mawlakhiat to Weisawdong — based on evidence gathered over the past few days. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, said the accused had earlier admitted to the crime during interrogation, but the SIT needed to retrace and verify the sequence of events. The reconstruction began at Mawlakhiat, where the couples scooty was parked. The team then moved to a spot 3-4 kilometers from the Weisawdong parking lot where, according to investigators, there was an initial attempt to kill Raja. However, he managed to start his bike and escape. About 200 meters from the final crime scene, only photographs were taken — no attack was attempted at that location. At the Weisawdong parking lot, police meticulously mapped the position of the parked scooties and entry points to the viewpoint. The accused were brought to the location to demonstrate where each person stood before and during the attack. A Fire and Emergency Service personnel acted as Raja during the reenactment, helping investigators understand the sequence of the assault — including the positions of the accused and the nature of the attack. Police confirmed that three fatal blows were delivered — the first by Vishal Chauhan, the second by Anand Kurmi, and the third by Akash Rajput. The recovered machetes were distinguished by their handles: one orange, and the other steel. The white shirt worn by Akash, which was later found with Raja’s body, was also accounted for. Investigators determined how Raja’s mobile phone was damaged — initially by Sonam and later by Vishal. According to Syiem, the post-mortem report confirmed two sharp weapon injuries to the head. A third wound to the neck, allegedly inflicted by Anand, did not have an impact since Anad was nervous. Syiem revealed that Raja had removed all his ornaments before trekking back up to Mawlakhiat. Sonam, who was present during the murder, allegedly signaled the others to “finish the job.” Vishal’s first blow, delivered with both hands, caused Raja to collapse. Sonam then reportedly screamed after seeing the blood and fled the scene. The three accused carried Raja’s body — two holding his hands and one his legs — before disposing of it near the viewpoint. Initial theories that one accused was stationed as a lookout were ruled out. “The path to the parking lot is zigzag, and the idea of someone keeping watch doesn’t hold upon reevaluation,” Syiem said. While the primary motive appears to be a love triangle, the police are investigating other possible angles, including financial gain. Raj, believed to be Sonam’s lover, worked in her family’s company. His sudden absence post-murder would have raised suspicion, which explains his continued communication with the family. Police have confirmed that Sonam has consistently admitted to the crime, including during Tuesday’s reconstruction. “Whether they show remorse is subjective, but yes, any criminal caught will regret their actions,” Syiem noted. “Sonam didn’t cry. She calmly responded to all questions during the reenactment.” ========= Support Independent Journalism by becoming Our Premium Member: https://eastmojo.com/eastmojo-subscri... ========= Subscribe to never miss an update: / @eastmojoofficial ========= Visit our website: https://www.eastmojo.com/ Become a Premium Member: https://eastmojo.com/eastmojo-subscri...
