Sachsenhausen was one of the first Nazi Concentration camps and the first of the reign of Heinrich Himmler as the chief of police from 1936 onwards. Located just outside Berlin it was a model for among other camps Auschwitz. Many bizarre schemes were conducted here including; the testing of shoe soles by prisoners in daily marathon length death marches; testing of performance endurance drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as the little known "Operation Bernhard" which was a program to forge allied currency that nearly destabilized the British pound, which could have had disastrous consequences for the British War effort. The forged cash of the operation was used successfully to pay off several international intelligence operations and the notes were found in circulation in Britain long after the War. The Camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945, who however quickly reinstated it and used it for Nazi and SS prisoners until it was finally discontinued by the German GDR regime in 1950 and made into a memorial in 1961 and a further museum was added in the 1990s.
