Ranipur is counted among the ancient towns of Sindh province. It is located at a distance of 30 km from Kot Diji Fort and 50 km from Khairpur district. The city was settled in the 16th century. Ranipur is situated between two canals, the Rohri Canal to the east and the Abol Canal to the west, but the area is irrigated by the Rohri Canal, while other water needs are met by the Abol Canal. Why is it called "Ranipur"? When Darya Khan, the ruler of Thatta, came to Khairpur with his queen, he liked the scenery of this town so much that he stayed here for many months. During this time he named her after his wife and gave her the name "Ranipur". The town also enjoyed the status of a state and even today the name "Ranipur State" is inscribed on its railway station. After the formation of Pakistan, its statehood came to an end. The town is also important for the shrines of the saints. At a distance of 3 km from Ranipur is the mausoleum of Hazrat Sachal Sarmast, a Sufi poet, and also the mausoleums of Saleh Shah, Hajran Shah, and King Budla. The town has five gates named after the elders of the religion, including Bab Dastgir, Bab Sachal Sarmast, Bab Bodla, Bab Saleh Shah, and Bab Shah Abdul Jabbar Shah.
