Today was the day we’d been so excited for — our Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Tour! I even wore my Back to the Future T-shirt for the occasion, and when our tour guide said it was his favourite film, everything felt perfect… at first. We’d seen other VIP guests getting off the tram to walk around the Back to the Future set, but this time there was filming in the area, so we couldn’t. To be fair, you never know what VIP areas you’ll see, but it was still a big disappointment. Our guide was fantastic — friendly, funny and full of knowledge — but the overall experience just didn’t feel much better than the regular tram tour. It was only about 20 minutes longer, and I expected it to be 2–3 hours. We did get great seats for Waterworld and Kung Fu Panda, and an hour for lunch, but the day lacked the special touches we imagined — no characters like Doc Brown or Dracula in sight. Later, back at the Hilton, we found a glossy VIP experience book showing everything the tour promises… so we turned each page and compared what it said to what we actually got. For £544 — was it worth it?
